Fifty years after its formal creation on February 3, 1976, Oyo State has once again asserted its place as one of Nigeria’s most historically grounded and culturally influential states, as week-long activities marking its Golden Jubilee climax today, Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

From its ancient roots as the heartland of the old Oyo Empire to its modern status as a political, educational and cultural hub of the South-West, the state’s 50th anniversary celebration—aptly themed “Ajíṣe bí Ọ̀yọ́ làárí”—has been both a remembrance of the past and a projection into the future.

A State Born of History
Oyo State was carved out of the old Western State in 1976 during the military administration of General Murtala Mohammed. Since then, it has grown into a centre of scholarship, culture, agriculture and governance, hosting Nigeria’s first university—the University of Ibadan—and producing some of the country’s most influential political, literary and cultural figures.

Under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, the Golden Jubilee was designed not merely as a ceremonial anniversary, but as a people-centred celebration reflecting Oyo’s heritage, resilience and collective identity.

A Week of Purposeful Celebrations
The celebrations formally commenced on Monday, January 26, 2026, with an opening ceremony at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan, drawing dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders and stakeholders from across the state and beyond.

One of the most socially impactful highlights followed on Tuesday, January 27, when the state government rolled out a free health outreach across all 33 local government areas, targeting senior citizens aged 50 and above, as well as vulnerable residents. On the same day, a state-wide film show by celebrated filmmaker Kunle Afolayan brought culture closer to the grassroots, with screenings held simultaneously in Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomosho, Iseyin, Eruwa and Saki.

Culture and creativity took centre stage on Wednesday, January 28, as a colourful carnival and local government parade moved from the historic Mapo Hall to Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, showcasing the rich traditions of Oyo’s diverse communities. The evening musical concert that followed further reinforced the state’s reputation as a cultural powerhouse.

Intellectual engagement came to the fore on Thursday, January 29, with a lecture and symposium at the ICC, University of Ibadan, where scholars and policymakers examined Oyo’s journey over five decades and debated pathways for sustainable development.

Friday, January 30, blended leisure, faith and fellowship, beginning with a ceremonial golf tee-off by Governor Makinde at the Ibadan Golf Course, followed by Jumat prayers at the Ibadan Central Mosque, Ojo-Oba, and a golf dinner later in the evening.

Youth engagement dominated Saturday, January 31, with a Youth Day celebration and concert, capped by a novelty football match between a team led by Nigerian football legend Mutiu Adepoju and the Governor’s team, highlighting sports as a unifying force.

Faith, Compassion and the Future
Thanksgiving services on Sunday, February 1, at St. Peter’s Church, Aremo, with Governor Makinde in attendance, offered a moment of reflection and gratitude. The same day, an evening dedicated to elderly women and persons living with disabilities at Olounloyo Park underscored the administration’s emphasis on inclusion and social care.

Education took the spotlight on Monday, February 2, as the Governor’s wife, Engineer Tamunominini Makinde, led school visitations and distributed stationery to public school pupils—symbolising investment in the next generation as Oyo looks beyond its first 50 years.

A Golden Finale
The celebrations reach their climax today, Tuesday, February 3, with the Golden Jubilee Gala and Award Night, featuring a cocktail reception, an air show, and a grand dinner where individuals and institutions that have contributed to the state’s growth over the decades are being honoured.

As Oyo State turns 50, the celebrations have gone beyond pageantry to reflect governance, culture, compassion and continuity. For many residents, the jubilee has rekindled pride in a shared history while renewing hope in a future shaped by unity, innovation and purposeful leadership.

Half a century on, Oyo is not just celebrating its age—it is reaffirming its identity.
