Kano — The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) appeared on course for victory in the Kano State House of Assembly by-election as results continued to be counted late Saturday night, following the absence of major opposition parties from the ballot papers.

Earlier reports indicated that prominent opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), were missing from the ballot for the election conducted in Kano State.

The Merit Newspaper gathered that as of 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, ongoing vote counting across polling units showed the APC maintaining a wide lead over other parties featured on the ballot, placing its candidate in a strong position ahead of the final declaration.

Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had yet to officially announce the winner at the time of filing this report, observers said the margin recorded during collation suggested that the APC candidate could be formally declared winner on Sunday.

The by-election was organised to fill a vacant seat in the Kano State House of Assembly, with political analysts noting that the absence of major opposition parties significantly shaped the competitiveness of the poll.

INEC is expected to release the final certified results after the completion of collation at the designated centre.
