In a move aimed at cushioning the economic hardship caused by rising petrol prices, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a temporary wage support of N10,000 for workers across the state public service.

The governor said the additional allowance would be paid monthly for an initial period of three months beginning from April 2026 and would benefit workers at both the state and local government levels.

Makinde explained that the intervention became necessary following the persistent increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which has worsened the cost of living for workers and their families.

According to him, the decision reflects his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and responsive governance.

“We understand the pressure that the current fuel price situation has placed on our workers and the general public. This temporary wage support is part of our efforts to reduce the burden and support our workforce during this difficult period,” the governor said.

He added that his administration would continue to monitor the economic situation and may extend the allowance if fuel prices remain high after the initial three-month period.

“If the current fuel price realities persist beyond the three months, we will review the situation and consider continuing the support in the interest of our workers,” Makinde added.

The governor reiterated that his government would continue to prioritise policies that protect workers’ welfare while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Observers note that Makinde’s approval of the wage support may further strengthen industrial harmony in the state, as organised labour continues negotiations with governments across Nigeria on improved wages and working conditions.

The governor assured workers that his administration remains open to dialogue with labour unions and will continue to explore sustainable ways to improve their welfare.

“Our government will always engage with labour in good faith. We will continue to do what is possible within our resources to ensure that Oyo State workers remain motivated and productive,” he said.

The N10,000 wage support is expected to take effect from April payroll, bringing temporary relief to thousands of civil servants grappling with Nigeria’s current economic realities.
