The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office amid growing political tension and an ongoing dispute with the Kano State House of Assembly.

The development was confirmed on Friday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, who disclosed that the decision had been formally communicated, although he declined to give details about the circumstances surrounding the resignation.

“Yes, it is true. The deputy governor has resigned from his position,” Shuaibu told The PUNCH, without further elaboration.

Gwarzo’s resignation comes at a time of heightened political developments in the state, particularly following recent disagreements between him and the State House of Assembly.

Assembly allegations and looming disciplinary action
In the days leading to his resignation, the Kano Assembly had reportedly raised a number of allegations against the deputy governor bordering on misconduct and concerns relating to the performance of his official duties.

Lawmakers were also said to have initiated steps many political observers interpreted as a prelude to possible disciplinary measures, a situation that fuelled speculation about an impending political confrontation within the executive arm of government.

A political analyst in Kano, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the situation as “a delicate moment in the state’s governance structure,” noting that the resignation may have been a strategic move to avoid a prolonged institutional crisis.

“The events of the past few days suggested that the relationship between the deputy governor and the legislature had become strained. His resignation may have helped to prevent a deeper political crisis,” the analyst said.

Political realignments after governor’s defection
The resignation is also coming against the backdrop of recent political realignments in Kano State following the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has significantly altered the political equation within the state.

Since the defection, the governor has undertaken a series of administrative changes seen by insiders as part of efforts to stabilise his government and align it with emerging political realities.

As part of these restructuring efforts, the governor recently approved the removal of the Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa, a decision government sources said was aimed at repositioning the state’s civil service for greater efficiency, discipline, and improved service delivery.

In a similar development, the Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Shehu Wada Sagagi, was also relieved of his appointment as part of what officials described as a broader reorganisation of government operations.

A senior government source noted that the changes were necessary to strengthen governance.

“Government is a continuous process. From time to time, adjustments become necessary to improve performance and ensure that the administration remains focused on its mandate,” the source said.

Governance implications
Observers believe the recent developments signal a broader effort by the Kano State Government to consolidate its political base and streamline governance structures in line with its evolving priorities.

The Merit Newspaper reports that while details of the allegations against the former deputy governor remain unclear, sources within the Assembly indicated that the issues were already under legislative scrutiny before his decision to step down.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain official reaction from the Kano State Government were unsuccessful.

Constitutional process begins
With the deputy governor’s seat now vacant, attention is expected to shift to the constitutional process required to fill the position.

Under Nigeria’s constitutional provisions, the governor is expected to nominate a replacement, subject to confirmation by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Political analysts say the resignation could further reshape Kano’s political landscape, especially as alignments continue ahead of future electoral contests.

“This development is significant because Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states. Any major change in its leadership structure naturally has wider political implications,” another analyst noted.

For now, attention remains focused on the next steps the governor will take and how the unfolding developments may affect governance and political stability in the state.
