Mexico became the first nation to book a place in the knockout phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0, while Canada produced the most emphatic performance of the tournament so far with a stunning 6-0 demolition of Qatar as four matches lit up Groups A and B on Thursday.

The action-packed day also saw Czechia and South Africa share the spoils in a 1-1 draw, while Switzerland boosted their qualification hopes with a commanding 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mexico’s narrow victory over South Korea secured a second consecutive win for El Tri and guaranteed their progression to the Round of 32 with one group game to spare. Having opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa, the co-hosts maintained their perfect start and delighted home supporters with another disciplined display.

Earlier in the day, Czechia and South Africa battled to a 1-1 draw in a fiercely contested Group A encounter. The result left both teams with hopes of advancing still alive heading into their final group matches.

In Group B, Switzerland recovered from their opening draw against Qatar with an impressive 4-1 triumph over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Swiss side showed attacking flair and defensive solidity to put themselves firmly back in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.

However, the headline performance came from Canada, who overwhelmed Qatar 6-0 in front of jubilant fans. The hosts delivered a ruthless attacking masterclass, recording the biggest win of the tournament so far and significantly strengthening their chances of progressing from Group B.

Thursday’s results added fresh drama to the expanded 48-team tournament, with qualification battles intensifying across the groups. While Mexico celebrated an early ticket to the knockout stage, several nations face decisive final matches as the race for places in the next round gathers momentum.
