Canada became the first nation to book a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa in the opening Round of 32 fixture on Sunday.

The closely contested encounter marked the official start of the tournament’s knockout phase, where every match is a winner-takes-all contest. Canada showed resilience, discipline and composure to overcome a determined South African side and keep alive their dream of lifting football’s biggest prize.

After an evenly balanced contest, Canada found the decisive breakthrough that separated the two sides, while their defence stood firm to deny South Africa an equaliser. The victory sealed Canada’s passage into the Round of 16, making them the first team to advance beyond the opening knockout round.
