The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved a 90-day economic action plan proposed by the Federal Ministry of Finance to tackle the rising cost of living, improve food affordability and accelerate projects expected to deliver benefits to Nigerians.
The plan is aimed at addressing economic pressures on households and improving access to essential goods and services amid concerns over the rising cost of food and other basic necessities.
The approval signals a renewed effort by the government to address the economic challenges confronting Nigerians through targeted interventions and measures designed to improve living conditions.
Food affordability remains a major concern for many households, as the prices of essential commodities continue to place pressure on family budgets. The proposed action plan is expected to prioritise measures that could make food more accessible and reduce the burden of rising living expenses.
Beyond food affordability, the initiative also seeks to accelerate projects expected to have a direct impact on citizens. Faster implementation of such projects could improve access to essential infrastructure and services while supporting economic activities in affected communities.
The 90-day timeline provides a defined period for implementing the proposed measures and assessing progress towards the plan’s objectives. Its effectiveness, however, will depend on the specific interventions adopted, the speed of implementation and coordination among the relevant government institutions.

For Nigerians struggling with the cost of food, transportation, housing and other daily necessities, the major expectation is that the plan will translate into practical improvements rather than remain an administrative commitment.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the government will also face expectations to ensure that the benefits of the interventions reach vulnerable households, low-income earners, traders, farmers and other groups affected by prevailing economic pressures.
Although the NEC’s approval represents a step towards addressing these concerns, the ultimate measure of success will be whether the initiative produces noticeable improvements in food prices, household purchasing power and the delivery of projects that directly benefit citizens.

Further details on the specific measures, implementation arrangements and expected outcomes would help Nigerians assess the likely impact of the 90-day plan.
For now, attention will focus on how quickly the approved proposals are translated into action and whether they can provide meaningful relief to households facing mounting living costs.
