Simawa, Ogun State – In an inspiring tale of resilience and ambition, Odetunde Ismail, a 14-year-old Junior Secondary School student of Simawa High School, has become a master barber and an independent earner at a remarkably young age. Ismail, who began learning the art of barbing at just 10 years old, completed his training and started his journey as a professional barber by the age of 12.

While many of his peers initially ridiculed him for dedicating his time to mastering a skill, they now admire his independence and entrepreneurial spirit. “Those who used to laugh at me when I started are now envious of my ability to stand on my own,” Ismail shared with a smile.

Reflecting on his journey, Ismail credited his diligence and discipline during his apprenticeship as critical to his success. “I always believed I would prosper in this business because I was never absent or lazy during my training. I made sure to be at my boss’s shop as early as 7 a.m. on weekends and headed straight there after school on weekdays,” he recounted.

Grateful for the support he received, Ismail expressed appreciation for his family and mentor. “I am thankful to my boss and my parents. They are the power behind my early success,” he said.

Ismail’s entrepreneurial drive has not only earned him financial independence but also inspired his peers to rethink their career aspirations. Encouraging young Nigerians to embrace skill acquisition, he said, “I urge my colleagues to engage in one apprenticeship or another, whether it is carpentry, tailoring, or barbing. White-collar jobs are becoming scarce, and skilled jobs are the way forward.”

He added, “We young Nigerians should take the initiative to empower ourselves. Waiting for the government to create opportunities is not the answer; we need to seize these chances and build our future.”

Ismail’s success story underscores the importance of vocational training and the potential it holds for youth empowerment. As he continues to manage his growing barbing business while excelling in school, his story serves as an inspiration to many young Nigerians seeking to carve their own paths to success.
