Muslim Clerics Under Fire: Jamiu Muili Calls for Unity Amid Rising Social Media Feuds

A concerned Nigerian, Mr. Jamiu Muili, has appealed to Nigerian Muslims, particularly Islamic scholars, to desist from ridiculing one another on social media. He described the ongoing trend as harmful to the unity and dignity of the Muslim community, urging them to embrace harmony and respect in their engagements.

Muili expressed concern over recent spats among notable Islamic clerics on various social media platforms, which he said undermine the reputation of the faith and provide opportunities for other religious groups to mock Muslims.

“It is heartbreaking to see our scholars, who are supposed to guide us, publicly ridiculing one another online. When we, as Muslims, tackle each other in such a manner, we not only expose our shortcomings but also give room for other religious practitioners to mock us,” Muili said.

He specifically referenced the recent altercation between renowned comparative scholar Mallam Yusuf Adepoju, popularly known as ACADIP, and another scholar, Okanlomo Al-Hizat. Okanlomo criticized Adepoju’s comparative religious teachings, alleging that he was not well-versed in the theological discussions involving the Qur’an and the Bible. Okanlomo went as far as suggesting that Adepoju should abandon his efforts, claiming they only confuse Nigerians.

Muili also highlighted another rift between Sheikh Labeeb Lagbaji and Ahmad Yelma’e Yusuf. In this instance, Sheikh Labeeb accused Yelma’e of propagating a divisive form of Islam, labeling him a “Salafi 1990,” and alleging that such teachings create national chaos. Sheikh Labeeb even called on the government to monitor individuals with such ideologies.

“These disagreements among our scholars are like two siblings fighting in public. It’s shameful and damaging. Have we ever seen Christians publicly attacking one another like this on social media? Muslims need to reflect on their actions and realize the damage being done to our image and unity,” Muili lamented.

He called on Muslims, particularly those from the Southwest, to pay close attention to the ongoing conflicts and urged them to choose their leaders wisely.

“When following any Islamic leader, we must be discerning and ensure they promote unity and true Islamic values,” he said.

Muili warned that the divisive behavior displayed by some clerics could jeopardize the credibility of Islamic teachings and discourage young Muslims from adhering to the faith. He urged scholars to focus on constructive dialogue and mutual respect, emphasizing that Islam is a religion of peace and brotherhood.

“It is time for our scholars to lead by example and uphold the principles of unity and respect that Islam teaches. Let us not give others the opportunity to ridicule our religion due to our own shortcomings,” he said.

Muili’s call for unity comes at a time when social media has become a platform for both positive and negative engagements, making it imperative for religious leaders to use it responsibly.
