Sheikh Sulaiman Kegbegbe and Dr. Sharaf Gbadebo Raji

Young Islamic scholar, Sheikh Sulaiman Kegbegbe, has advised renowned Islamic scholar Dr. Sharaf Gbadebo Raji to ensure that he provides explanations for exceptions in Islamic jurisprudence, particularly on matters that intersect with modern social and technological developments. Sheikh Kegbegbe made this appeal during a sermon delivered before the Jummah service at his mosque in Ibadan.

The advice comes in the wake of widespread criticism leveled against Dr. Raji following his recent comments condemning photography as forbidden in Islam. The controversy was fueled further by images of Dr. Raji taken during his trip to Qatar, where he received an award for translating notable Islamic Arabic texts into Yoruba.

During the sermon, Sheikh Kegbegbe emphasized the importance of contextualizing Islamic rulings to avoid public misunderstandings and contradictions. He stated, “Islamic jurisprudence is a guide for all times and places. However, scholars must clarify when exceptions apply, especially in areas influenced by technological and societal advancements. For instance, photography is now an essential tool for identification, security, and documentation.”

Sheikh Kegbegbe pointed out that while Dr. Raji’s stance on photography might be rooted in traditional interpretations, the scholar should have acknowledged the realities of modern life where photographs are indispensable. “If photography is deemed haram in principle, then exceptions should be clearly explained to avoid confusion. Without this clarity, many will struggle to reconcile their faith with their daily responsibilities, such as obtaining a passport or a National Identity Number (NIN),” he added.

Sheikh Kegbegbe called for unity and dialogue among Islamic scholars to address such controversies and provide balanced interpretations that align with the realities of contemporary society. “Our scholars must lead by example and show us how to navigate modern challenges without compromising Islamic values. Clear communication is key,” he reiterated.

The sermon resonated with many attendees, with one congregant, AbdulRasheed Afolabi, expressing agreement. “Sheikh Kegbegbe has spoken the truth. Scholars should guide us in understanding how to uphold Islamic principles while adapting to the demands of modern life,” he said.

The issue has also sparked broader debates within the Islamic community, with some critics accusing Dr. Raji of hypocrisy for appearing in photographs at the award ceremony despite his stance. Others have questioned how he was able to travel internationally without complying with mandatory photography requirements for travel documents.

As Nigerians await a formal response from Dr. Gbadebo Raji, Sheikh Kegbegbe’s sermon has set the tone for a constructive conversation about the evolving application of Islamic jurisprudence in the modern era.
