K1 De Ultimate

The renowned Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, has stirred significant controversy within Nigeria’s Islamic community following his refusal to retract a statement perceived as offensive to Alfas (Islamic clerics). The statement, “Awon Alfa won ga’anu sibi” (loosely translated as “These Alfas are unreasonable”), was made a day before the 7-day Fidau prayer held for his late mother in Ijebu Ode on Friday, January 24, 2025.

K1’s refusal to apologize has divided opinions among Islamic scholars, with some Sheikhs and Imams defending his stance while others have criticized the clerics who attended the event despite the musician’s controversial remarks.

Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Sulaimon Onikijipa reportedly urged K1 to retract his statement and attribute it to a slip of the tongue. However, the Fuji maestro stood his ground, insisting that he would not apologize or withdraw his comment.

Several renowned Sheikhs, who spoke on the matter, argued that the blame should not rest on K1 but on the clerics who disregarded the viral statement and attended the event. These scholars described the attendees as “intruders” and “idle individuals” who failed to properly assess the implications of associating themselves with the event.

One of the Sheikhs, speaking anonymously, said: “It is disappointing that those who were offended by the statement chose to attend the prayer despite the insult. By doing so, they have inadvertently validated K1’s words. These clerics should be more rational and discerning in handling such matters.”

The debate has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians questioning whether clerics should hold public figures to higher moral standards or prioritize community unity during religious events.

The Fidau prayer, held in Ijebu Ode, attracted several prominent Islamic clerics despite the controversy, further fueling the backlash. Critics have called for the Islamic community to address the issue collectively to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

As the debate continues, many believe the episode highlights the growing tension between public figures and religious institutions in Nigeria, raising questions about respect, accountability, and the role of Islamic clerics in society.
