The gruesome murder of a young woman, Miss Lawal Hafsoh Yetunde, in Ilorin, allegedly by Abdul Rahman Bello, has reignited public outrage over ritual killings in Nigeria, with critics calling for urgent action against perpetrators. The incident, which is one of many similar cases in recent times, has sparked a heated debate about the role of some self-proclaimed Islamic clerics, popularly referred to as Alfas, in such crimes.

Nigerians have taken to social media to express their frustration, accusing some Alfas of abandoning legitimate means of livelihood to engage in unlawful practices such as Jalabi – a term used to describe fraudulent or ritualistic activities disguised under religious pretense. Many critics argue that the rise in ritual killings is linked to the actions of individuals who claim to be clerics but instead exploit their followers for personal gain.

In response to the public outcry, a wave of online criticism has been directed at self-styled Alfas who have promoted Jalabi on social media. Many Nigerians have celebrated the apparent retreat of such individuals from online platforms, interpreting it as a sign that they are being forced to abandon their illicit activities.

“So nobody can come on social media again and call himself Alfa Jalabi with full chest,” one social media user commented, highlighting the growing intolerance for those associated with the practice.

Another critic stated, “Anyone caught online or physically parading himself as an Alfa, when asked what his job is, will be dealt with seriously. You engage in killings, rituals, and other nefarious activities because you don’t have a job.”

The latest incident in Ilorin adds to a disturbing trend of ritual killings involving individuals posing as clerics, fraudsters, and self-proclaimed spiritualists. Many Nigerians are now calling on religious and traditional leaders to take decisive steps in disowning and exposing such individuals who tarnish the reputation of legitimate Alfas and other religious figures.

Meanwhile, security agencies have assured the public that thorough investigations are ongoing to ensure that justice is served. The Nigerian Police Force has urged citizens to report suspicious activities and avoid falling prey to deceitful individuals who exploit religion for criminal purposes.

As the nation grapples with the rising tide of ritual killings, there is a growing consensus that addressing unemployment, strengthening law enforcement, and promoting ethical religious practices are essential in curbing these heinous crimes.
