L/R: Governor Seyi Makinde and Imam Ayilara

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on the people of the state to embrace peace and unity, emphasizing that progress and stability can only be achieved when residents live in harmony. The governor made this statement on Monday during the 11th Omituntun Annual Ramadan Public Lecture held at the Government House Arcade, Agodi, Ibadan.

Addressing Islamic faithful at the event, Governor Makinde acknowledged the role of religious leaders in fostering peace and development, urging them to continue preaching unity and tolerance. He particularly called on the Muslim Ummah to intensify prayers for the state, noting that their support has been instrumental in the success of his administration.

Grand Chief Imam Advocates Peace, Receives Governor’s Recognition

During the Ramadan lecture, the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland, Sheikh Imam Talihat Oluwashina Yunus Ayilara, PhD, delivered a sermon titled “Benefits of Being a Good Neighbour: An Islamic Perspective.” He emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among people of different religious and ethnic backgrounds.

The Imam urged religious leaders to ensure that faith does not become a tool for division but rather a bridge that unites people regardless of their affiliations. He lauded Governor Makinde’s governance style, describing him as a God-fearing leader committed to the welfare of all residents of Oyo State, irrespective of their religious beliefs.

In recognition of the Imam’s leadership and commitment to peace, Governor Makinde presented him with a brand-new car. This gesture, according to observers, is a testament to the value of religious leaders who promote truth, righteousness, and unity without engaging in manipulative or exploitative means.

Public Reactions: A Lesson for Religious Leaders

The car gift has sparked discussions among the Muslim community, with many praising the governor’s gesture as a sign that integrity and sincerity in religious leadership do not go unnoticed. Some Muslims expressed their admiration for Sheikh Ayilara, emphasizing that true success does not come from coercing followers into giving gifts but from genuine service to humanity.

Aishat Olawale, an attendee at the event, commended Governor Makinde, saying, “May Allah reward Governor Seyi Makinde and continue to elevate him. Congratulations to the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland.”

Another observer highlighted the significance of the gift, stating, “Governor Seyi Makinde, a Christian, has honored a Muslim cleric because the Imam preaches messages of peace, similar to what both Prophet Muhammad and Jesus Christ taught. This is the kind of religious tolerance and unity we need in Nigeria.”

The development has also been viewed as an encouragement to Islamic scholars who remain steadfast in truth and sincerity. Some noted that in an era where fraudulent religious leaders manipulate their followers for financial gains, the recognition of a cleric for his integrity is a refreshing example that righteousness is still valued in society.

Fostering Religious Harmony for Societal Advancement

Governor Makinde’s gesture underscores the importance of religious harmony in fostering a progressive society. By supporting religious leaders who promote peace, tolerance, and moral uprightness, the government sets a precedent for strengthening interfaith relations and national unity.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with religious and ethnic tensions, moments like this serve as a reminder that leadership, guided by fairness and inclusivity, can bridge divides and inspire a more united nation.
