President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas (retd.), a former Chief of Naval Staff, as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, following the declaration of a state of emergency in the oil-rich state. Ibas was sworn in at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday at about 3:00 p.m.

The appointment comes after the federal government suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for an initial period of six months, citing prolonged political instability, constitutional breaches, and security threats.

State of Emergency Declared in Rivers

The crisis in Rivers State has been building for months due to a protracted power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The tension escalated following the defection of lawmakers from Fubara’s camp to Wike’s faction, leading to parallel legislative activities and conflicting political allegiances within the state.

The security situation further deteriorated with reported cases of violent protests and attacks on government institutions, prompting the federal government to take extraordinary measures. President Tinubu, in a televised address on Monday night, said the declaration of a state of emergency was necessary to restore stability and ensure governance in Rivers State.

Ibas Takes Charge

Vice Admiral Ibas, who served as Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021, is expected to use his military background to restore order and address security concerns in the state. His appointment has been met with mixed reactions. While some stakeholders see it as a necessary step to prevent further chaos, others have criticized it as an overreach by the federal government.

Speaking after his swearing-in, Ibas assured Rivers residents of his commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the smooth running of the state’s affairs. “My duty is to bring stability and work with all stakeholders to return normalcy. Rivers State is too strategic to Nigeria’s economy to be left in crisis,” he said.

Reactions and Political Implications

The suspension of a sitting governor and the imposition of a sole administrator is a rare move in Nigeria’s democratic history. Legal experts and opposition parties have raised concerns about the constitutionality of the action, with some calling for judicial intervention. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to which Fubara belongs, has described the move as a “coup against democracy” and vowed to challenge it in court.

On the other hand, some political analysts argue that Tinubu’s decision was inevitable, given the worsening crisis in Rivers. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for transparency in handling the situation and urged all parties to adhere to the rule of law.

What Next for Rivers State?

With Ibas now at the helm, the coming weeks will be critical in determining the future of governance in Rivers State. The focus will be on how effectively he can stabilize the political landscape and whether the suspension of elected officials will stand legal scrutiny.

Meanwhile, residents of the state remain apprehensive about what the future holds, particularly concerning security, governance, and the economy. As Nigeria watches closely, Rivers State stands at a crossroads, with its political fate hanging in the balance.
