Ibadan, Oyo State – May 20, 2025

Tragedy struck in Ibadan on Tuesday morning when a secondary school student was reportedly killed by a stray bullet fired by a police officer.

The student, who was on his way to write the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC), was said to be accompanied by his father and twin brother when the incident occurred along Alakia Road in the state capital.

Eyewitnesses at the scene alleged that police officers were in pursuit of a suspect when one of them opened fire. A stray bullet allegedly hit the student, fatally wounding him. He was rushed to Welfare Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident sparked immediate outrage among residents and students, who carried the victim’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat in protest, demanding justice and calling for urgent intervention from Governor Seyi Makinde.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the shooting.
