Ibadan, Oyo State — Monday, July 7, 2025

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has joined his ancestors at the age of 90, just two days after marking his milestone birthday. His passing has drawn a wave of mourning across the Yoruba nation, with the Southwest Chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, leading tributes.

Ambassador Ajadi, in a heartfelt condolence message on Monday, July 7, expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s death and extended his sympathies to the royal family, Oyo State Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde, and the entire people of Ibadanland.

“The passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin is not just a loss to Ibadan or Oyo State, but to the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria at large,” Ajadi said. “He was a symbol of peace, culture, and continuity, who served with wisdom and honor throughout his life.”

Oba Olakulehin, born on July 5, 1935, ascended the revered Olubadan throne on July 12, 2024, following the death of his predecessor, Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II. He was officially presented with the staff of office by Governor Makinde, becoming the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Despite his short reign of just one year, Oba Olakulehin’s leadership was marked by unity, humility, and a deep respect for traditional institutions. He was known for his long and meritorious climb up the chieftaincy ladder, culminating in his final elevation from the Balogun line.

“Kabiyesi brought royal grace and dignity to the throne. Even in the brief time he reigned, his impact was felt across the land. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who cherish Yoruba customs and values,” Ajadi added.

Ambassador Ajadi also prayed for divine strength for the royal family, the Olubadan-in-Council, and the people of Ibadan to bear the irreparable loss.

“I pray for peace and strength for the family and for the kingmakers as they begin the process of choosing a worthy successor. May the spirit of Kabiyesi continue to watch over Ibadanland.”

Oba Olakulehin’s death comes just as the city marked his 90th birthday — a celebration now turned into mourning. His death, confirmed in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, underscores the fragility of life, even for those on the highest thrones.
