Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh

Lagos — In preparation for the Lagos State Local Government Elections scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 12, 2025, the Lagos State Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, who issued the directive on behalf of the Command, said the restriction applies to all forms of transportation—including road and waterway movement—within Lagos State jurisdiction. The decision, according to the police, is in line with security measures to ensure a smooth and violence-free electoral process.

“No vehicles, including those belonging to quasi-security outfits or state-owned security agencies, are allowed to operate during this period,” CP Moshood stated. He added that only essential service providers, including medical emergency workers, election officials accredited by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), and accredited election observers and journalists would be permitted to move—provided they are wearing LASIEC-certified identification tags.

The police also announced the prohibition of armed escorts, the ban on the indiscriminate use of sirens, and the use of covered number plates on election day, warning that violators would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

As part of heightened security measures, the Command issued a stern warning to potential troublemakers, urging hoodlums, political thugs, and miscreants to steer clear of polling units, collation centers, and other designated electoral sites across the state.

“The Command will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the election. Security operatives will be fully deployed to ensure law and order throughout the process,” CP Moshood warned.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or individuals through the Lagos Police emergency lines: 08063299264 and 08065154338.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission is conducting the elections to fill leadership positions in 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), a key component of grassroots governance in the state.

This restriction and security advisory come amid growing concerns about voter turnout and electoral violence, as past local elections in the state have been marred by apathy and sporadic unrest. The police, however, expressed confidence in the multi-agency coordination efforts under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) to deliver a peaceful and credible election.
