Lagos, Nigeria — September 25, 2025

The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Nigeria, has applauded the Federal Government for reaffirming its support for recognising Palestine as an independent state, describing Nigeria’s position as “timely and necessary” in line with the global consensus on the two-state solution.

The commendation came as world leaders gathered at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly, where debates on peace, statehood, and justice have taken centre stage.

In a statement issued on Thursday, MPAC’s Executive Chairman, Mr Disu Kamor, said Nigeria’s reaffirmation of Palestinian rights reflects its long-standing history of supporting liberation struggles and siding with justice.

“More nations are courageously stepping forward to recognise Palestine as a sovereign state,” Kamor said. “Their actions represent a long-overdue correction of decades of injustice endured by the Palestinian people under occupation, apartheid, and systemic human rights violations.”

However, MPAC urged the Federal Government to move beyond words and adopt concrete measures to reinforce its position. Among its recommendations were:

Sanctioning Israel for alleged violations of international law.

Joining South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Reviewing security and intelligence cooperation with Israeli institutions.

The organisation stressed that “the recognition of Palestine as a state is not a gift to be bestowed but a right to be upheld,” adding that Nigeria’s leadership would carry greater moral weight if matched by decisive action.

MPAC reiterated its solidarity with global movements pushing for Palestinian statehood and called on Nigeria to play a leading role in ensuring that Palestinians enjoy independence, freedom, and human rights.

“Justice delayed is justice denied. Nigeria must act now,” Kamor reiterated.
