Ijebu Ode, Ogun State — December 11, 2025

The Ogun State High Court sitting in Ijebu Ode has nullified the impeachment of Hon. Wale Adedayo as Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, declaring the action of the council legislators unconstitutional and without due process.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Catherine Ogunsanya of High Court 1 held that the impeachment carried out by seven councillors in 2023 did not comply with the provisions of the law guiding the removal of elected local government officials. She described the legislative action as “a violation of fair hearing and established procedure,” rendering it invalid.

Adedayo had challenged his impeachment through his legal team, CitiPoint Chambers, represented by Barrister Tesleem Adewuyi. The court agreed with his argument that the process leading to his removal was politically motivated and procedurally defective.

The former chairman was ousted after he alleged that the Ogun State Government failed to remit federal allocations meant for local governments—a claim that triggered political tensions across the state at the time.

In the ruling, the court also awarded ₦30 million in damages to Adedayo for the wrongful impeachment and ordered that he be paid all outstanding entitlements accrued to him as a former local government chairman.

The Merit Newspaper reports that legal analysts describe the judgment as a landmark decision that reinforces judicial independence and protects elected officials from unlawful removal. Supporters of Adedayo have hailed the verdict as a victory for transparency and accountability in local governance.

For Adedayo, the ruling brings an end to a prolonged legal and political battle. His camp described the decision as a “vindication of truth” and a reward for his “patriotic honesty and resilience.”

With the judgment, attention now shifts to how the Ogun State Government and the Ijebu East Legislative Council will respond to the court’s directives.
