Dr. Doyin Okupe

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Dr. Doyin Okupe, a veteran politician, medical doctor, and former presidential spokesperson, has passed away at the age of 72. His death was confirmed on Friday, March 7, 2025, sending shockwaves across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Okupe, who played a significant role in Nigerian politics, reportedly succumbed to health complications after battling prostate cancer and sarcoma. Sources close to the family disclosed that he had been in critical condition for weeks before his passing. In 2023, he was flown to Israel for advanced medical treatment after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, but his health did not improve as hoped.

A stalwart in political communications, Okupe served as a senior special assistant on public affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan. He was also a key figure in the 2023 presidential election, serving as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s Labour Party campaign before stepping down amid controversies. Despite his departure from Obi’s campaign, he remained vocal in national politics and later declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Throughout his career, Okupe was known for his strategic political engagements, outspoken nature, and deep involvement in shaping Nigeria’s political discourse. His contributions spanned multiple administrations, including his role as a media aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Tributes have begun pouring in from political associates, journalists, and public figures, highlighting his dedication to Nigeria’s democratic process. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a statement, described Okupe as “a fearless political communicator whose voice resonated across party lines.” Peter Obi also mourned his former campaign director, acknowledging his “unwavering passion for the country.”

Okupe’s passing marks the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most notable political strategists. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
