Lagos, March 22, 2025 – The overhead pedestrian bridge at Jakande Estate First Gate Bus Stop in Lekki Phase II is in a dangerously dilapidated state, raising serious safety concerns for thousands of residents and commuters who rely on it daily.

During an official visit to Jakande Housing Estate on Saturday, correspondents of The Merit Newspaper observed that the bridge, which facilitates safe passage for pedestrians crossing the ever-busy Lekki-Epe Expressway, is deteriorating. The staircases on both sides are visibly detaching from the main structure, posing a significant risk of collapse.

The bridge serves as a crucial link for residents of Jakande Estate and nearby communities, including those from Igbokushu, who use it to access buses heading towards Victoria Island, CMS, Obalende, Iyana Oworo, Oshodi, Chevron, VGC, and Ajah. With the current state of disrepair, many pedestrians are forced to take the risk of crossing the expressway directly, exposing themselves to fast-moving traffic.

Videos and pictures taken by The Merit Newspaper confirm the extent of the structural damage, highlighting the urgency for intervention. If immediate renovations are not carried out, the bridge could collapse, leading to potential injuries or fatalities.

We call on the Lagos State Ministry of Works and relevant agencies to conduct an urgent structural assessment and commence emergency repairs to prevent a looming disaster.

Residents and commuters are advised to exercise caution while using the bridge until necessary repairs are completed.
