Éric Chelle, The Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team. The decision, revealed on January 7, 2025, comes at a critical time for Nigerian football, as the Super Eagles seek to revive their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Chelle, a former Mali international with extensive coaching experience in African football, is expected to bring a fresh perspective and tactical discipline to the team. The Super Eagles currently sit fifth in their qualifying group, facing an uphill battle to secure a spot in the global tournament.

Born on November 11, 1977, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Chelle enjoyed a successful playing career as a centre-back in France, representing clubs such as Valenciennes, Lens, and Istres. He earned five caps for the Mali national team between 2004 and 2006, before transitioning to coaching. His managerial journey began in France, where he handled clubs like GS Consolat and FC Martigues before taking charge of the Mali national team in 2022.

During his tenure as Mali’s head coach, Chelle led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. However, his stint ended in June 2024 after a disappointing goalless draw against Madagascar in a World Cup qualifier.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to transform the Super Eagles into a formidable force. “Chelle’s experience in African football and his tactical acumen make him the ideal candidate to lead the Super Eagles back to their rightful place in global football,” Gusau said.

Chelle’s first test will come in March 2025 when the Super Eagles resume their World Cup qualifying campaign. The Nigerian public will hope that his appointment marks the beginning of a turnaround for the team, which has struggled to maintain its dominance in African football in recent years.

As Chelle takes the reins, football enthusiasts across the country eagerly anticipate a new era for the Super Eagles, with hopes of not only qualifying for the World Cup but also making a strong impact on the global stage.
