Mudashiru Obasa and Mojisola Meranda

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Lagos—A high-level shake-up is imminent in the Lagos State House of Assembly as Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda are set to resign from their positions, a move orchestrated by the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

A source within the Lagos APC, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed exclusively to The Merit Newspaper that the plan was finalized during a recent meeting between the GAC and members of the state House of Assembly.

According to the source, Meranda is expected to tender her resignation on Monday, March 3, followed by Speaker Obasa. Both resignation letters must be submitted to the GAC by Wednesday, March 5. On the same day, the GAC will announce a new speaker, reportedly from the Lagos West Senatorial District.

The impending leadership change signals a significant power shift within the Lagos APC and could have broader implications for the political landscape in the state.

Obasa, who has served as Speaker since 2015, is one of the longest-serving legislators in the Lagos Assembly, wielding considerable influence within the ruling party. His expected resignation raises questions about the internal dynamics at play within the APC leadership.

While the reasons behind the resignations remain unclear, political analysts speculate that the move could be linked to ongoing power realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. The GAC, known for its decisive role in determining key political appointments in Lagos, appears to be positioning a new leadership structure within the Assembly.

Attempts to get official confirmation from the Speaker’s office and the APC leadership in Lagos were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. However, political observers will be keenly watching for further developments as the state legislature undergoes this unexpected transition.
