LEKKI, LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has addressed growing fears among residents of Jakande Estate’s Cluster 2, assuring them that no demolition will take place without full compensation and proper notice.

This reassurance follows rumors that circulated across the estate on Saturday, April 12, suggesting that buildings within Cluster 2 would be demolished as early as Tuesday, April 15. The rumors triggered anxiety among landlords and tenants, who expressed concern over the lack of official communication.

In a response given to The Merit Newspaper on Sunday, April 13, the government clarified that it has not authorized any agency or official to intimidate or issue threats to residents in Cluster 2. “We have not sent any government officials or any agency to threaten the landlords in Cluster 2 in any form. Due processes such as compensation and quit notices must be duly and officially carried out before any demolition exercise can commence,” the Lagos State Government stated.

The clarification comes just days after the government confirmed that landlords in Cluster 1, the first phase of the Jakande Estate demolition, have received their compensation. The payment structure, administered by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), included ₦3.5 million for one-bedroom flat owners, ₦2.5 million for two-bedroom flat owners, and ₦1.5 million for three-bedroom flat owners. Beneficiaries have also been relocated to housing units in Sangotedo, Ikorodu, and Epe to ease their transition.

Residents of Cluster 2 have been urged to remain calm and await official communication regarding any future developments. The government reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, transparency, and respect for human dignity as urban renewal efforts continue across the state.
