Sheikh Jamiu Ami-Olohun

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Jamiu Ami-Olohun, has condemned the growing trend of awarding religious honors to individuals who have made no significant contributions to Islam or humanity. He expressed concern that some self-acclaimed Alfas (Islamic scholars) are using awards as a means of extorting wealthy individuals rather than recognizing true service to the faith.

Speaking on the matter, Sheikh Ami-Olohun stated, “It is totally wrong to give religious awards to people like Aunty and Brother Pablo. Many of these so-called Alfas grant awards to individuals they barely know, not because of their service to Islam but to exploit them for financial or material gain, such as money, land, or cars.”

The cleric lamented that such practices undermine the credibility of Islamic leadership and called for a shift in mindset among religious figures. He emphasized the importance of integrity and self-reliance among Alfas, urging them to seek lawful means of livelihood rather than depending on questionable practices.

“I have always advocated for Alfas to establish legitimate sources of income. Without a proper means of livelihood, no Alfa will be able to escape immorality,” he added.

Sheikh Ami-Olohun’s remarks have sparked discussions within the Islamic community, with many calling for stricter guidelines on the conferment of religious awards. Observers believe that ensuring such honors are reserved for those genuinely contributing to the growth of Islam will help restore the integrity of religious leadership.
