Renowned Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, has publicly acknowledged the pivotal roles played by two icons, the late Gbenga Adeboye and veteran filmmaker Tunde Kelani, in shaping his illustrious career.

In a heartfelt social media post accompanied by nostalgic throwback photos, Afolayan expressed profound gratitude to the duo for their mentorship and unwavering guidance during his formative years in the industry.

Reflecting on his relationship with the late comedian, broadcaster, and cultural icon Gbenga Adeboye, Afolayan shared: “Brother Gbenga Adeboye was more than a mentor; he was a beacon of inspiration who guided me both professionally and personally. We shared the same birthday, and his impact on my life is immeasurable. His wisdom and humor remain etched in my memory.”

Turning his attention to Tunde Kelani, the legendary filmmaker who gave him his big break, Afolayan revealed how Kelani’s trust in him became a turning point in his career. “Uncle TK, as I fondly call him, is the one who showed me the path. His work ethic and dedication to preserving our culture through storytelling gave me the blueprint to excel in this craft. I owe much of what I’ve achieved to his mentorship.”

Afolayan’s journey in Nollywood began under the tutelage of Kelani, who cast him in the iconic 2005 movie Saworoide, a film that highlighted Afolayan’s talent and set him on the path to stardom. Over the years, Afolayan has carved a niche for himself, producing critically acclaimed films such as The Figurine, October 1, and Anikulapo, all of which showcase his deep commitment to storytelling and African heritage.

Late Gbenga Adeboye, a revered entertainer known for his wit and cultural advocacy, was a household name in the 1980s and 1990s. His influence extended beyond comedy to mentorship, as he helped several young talents find their footing in the entertainment industry before his untimely death in 2003.

By paying homage to these two legends, Afolayan reminds his fans and colleagues of the importance of mentorship in building a legacy. “I wouldn’t be who I am today without them. It’s a privilege to honor their contributions to my life and to the industry,” Afolayan reiterated.

Kunle Afolayan’s tribute not only celebrates his mentors but also underscores the need for the current generation to acknowledge the foundations laid by trailblazers in Nigeria’s creative industry.
