Anxiety continues to mount across Nigeria, particularly in the South-West, as concerned citizens, activists, and political groups voice their frustration over the prolonged captivity of the Afenifere National Youth Council President, Prince Eniola Joseph Ojajuni. As of today, Thursday, February 27, 2025, there has been no confirmed progress in securing his release, leaving many worried about his condition after being shot and abducted by gunmen in Abuja 10 days ago.
Ransom Demand and Disturbing Video
The abductors have demanded a ransom of N100 million for Ojajuni’s release. In a distressing video that surfaced earlier this week, the youth leader, who appeared weak and in pain from a gunshot wound, pleaded with Nigerians to assist in raising the money. His desperate appeal has sparked a wave of reactions, with many calling on the government to intervene before it is too late.
“I am in captivity, and they are asking for N100 million. Please, Nigerians, help me,” Ojajuni said in the video, his voice barely audible.
The video has intensified concerns about his health and safety, with fears growing that his condition could deteriorate further if urgent action is not taken.
Afenifere and Yoruba Groups Demand Action
The abduction has drawn strong condemnation from prominent Yoruba groups, including Afenifere, which has described it as an attack on the region’s leadership and a reflection of Nigeria’s deepening security crisis. The group has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies to take immediate and decisive action to secure Ojajuni’s freedom.
In a statement, the Afenifere National Youth Council warned that the continued captivity of its leader is unacceptable and that failure to rescue him could trigger mass protests across the South-West.
“This is not just about Prince Ojajuni; this is about the safety of all Nigerians. If a leader of his stature can be abducted in the Federal Capital, then no one is safe. We demand that the federal government, security agencies, and all well-meaning Nigerians do everything possible to secure his release,” the statement read.
Similarly, the Coalition of Yoruba Youth Leaders Worldwide has described the abduction as a national security embarrassment, stressing that it highlights the growing lawlessness in the country. The group has vowed to mobilize young Nigerians for a peaceful demonstration if the government does not act swiftly.
Security Agencies Under Pressure
Despite widespread calls for action, security agencies have yet to provide a concrete update on efforts to rescue Ojajuni. While unconfirmed reports suggest that intelligence units are tracking the kidnappers, there has been no official statement from the Nigerian Police Force or the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding their progress.
A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, admitted that kidnapping syndicates have become more sophisticated, making rescue operations increasingly difficult. However, he assured that authorities are working round the clock to bring Ojajuni back safely.
“We understand the public’s frustration, but these operations require careful planning. We are doing everything within our power to ensure his safe return,” the officer stated.

Ojajuni’s abduction is just one of many high-profile kidnappings in Nigeria in recent months, further highlighting the country’s deteriorating security situation. Experts have blamed the crisis on factors such as poor intelligence gathering, inadequate security funding, and the growing influence of criminal syndicates operating across state borders.
