Ritualists

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

The alarming rise in the indiscriminate killings of young women in Nigeria has sparked widespread outrage, with concerned citizens taking to social media to demand answers and urgent action from authorities.

Amid the growing concerns, social media user Ovakachi Obangede captured the fear and frustration of many in a viral post. He questioned the safety of young women in relationships, lamenting that no matter who they date, the outcome seems tragically the same.

“If dem date yahoo boys, na butcher go end am. If dem date pastors or gospel singers, na same butcher. If dem come date Malam, na still butcher. Omo, who these ladies go come dey date now?”

The post has resonated with many Nigerians, fueling a broader conversation about the country’s worsening insecurity and the dangers faced by young women. Some commenters have pointed to ritual killings, domestic violence, and unchecked criminal activities as contributing factors, urging the government to act swiftly.

Women’s rights advocates and security experts have called on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in investigating these killings and ensuring perpetrators face justice. Many Nigerians insist that beyond social media outrage, concrete actions—such as improved policing, stricter enforcement of laws, and community vigilance—are needed to end the menace.

As the cries for justice grow louder, citizens are hoping that the government and security forces will respond with the urgency the situation demands.
