Governor Monday Okpebholo

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has officially dismissed several petitions challenging the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo, delivered by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in the 2024 governorship race.

In a recent ruling, the tribunal dismissed petitions from political parties including the Action Alliance (AA), the Action Democratic Party (ADP), and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), stating that these petitions lacked merit or pertained to pre-election issues that fell outside its jurisdiction.

The petition filed by the Action Alliance, which was a major contender in the election, was particularly scrutinized. The tribunal ruled that their claims failed to meet the required legal standards, and it was noted that their case did not address valid electoral issues. The petition was dismissed on the grounds that the tribunal had no jurisdiction to entertain pre-election matters.

Additionally, the cases brought forth by the ADP and ZLP were dismissed following the parties’ official withdrawal of their petitions, with no substantial legal grounds raised to warrant further deliberation.

However, the tribunal did not address the specific petitions filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which had initially challenged Governor Okpebholo’s victory in the 2024 election. The PDP’s legal team has expressed their intention to proceed with the case, indicating that more legal battles could follow.

The ruling has drawn mixed reactions from political analysts and party supporters across the state. Some view the tribunal’s decision as a victory for the APC, solidifying Governor Okpebholo’s position, while others argue that the dismissal of these petitions highlights ongoing concerns regarding electoral fairness in the region.

Governor Okpebholo, who assumed office in 2024, has yet to make an official statement regarding the tribunal’s ruling. His political allies are hopeful that the ruling will further strengthen his position as the legitimate winner of the election, paving the way for more stability in his administration.

The tribunal’s final decision marks a significant development in the legal battles surrounding the governorship election and sets the stage for the coming weeks as various political players assess their next steps.

As the situation evolves, observers continue to monitor the PDP’s response, as their petition could potentially alter the current dynamics.
