President Klaus Iohannis

Bucharest, Romania – February 12, 2025

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has tendered his resignation, stepping down from office ahead of a scheduled impeachment process. His decision follows the annulment of the December 2024 presidential election due to alleged Russian interference, a situation that has fueled political uncertainty in the Eastern European nation.

In a televised address, Iohannis stated that his resignation was necessary to prevent further political turmoil and safeguard Romania’s international reputation. “My priority has always been the stability and democratic integrity of our nation. I am stepping down to allow a smooth transition and ensure that Romania remains strong on the global stage,” he said.

His departure comes as far-right opposition parties push for his impeachment, citing dissatisfaction with his handling of the electoral crisis. The December election, which was supposed to determine Iohannis’ successor, was invalidated by the country’s constitutional court, prompting calls for a fresh vote.

With Iohannis’ resignation, Senate President Ilie Bolojan is expected to take over as interim leader until the rescheduled presidential election takes place in May 2025. Political analysts believe this move could ease tensions but may also embolden opposition groups ahead of the upcoming polls.

The European Union and NATO, of which Romania is a member, have closely monitored the situation, expressing concerns over potential foreign interference in the country’s democratic process.

As Romania prepares for a new election, political observers suggest that the coming months will be crucial in determining the nation’s path forward. Meanwhile, Iohannis’ resignation marks the end of a presidency that spanned nearly a decade, leaving a complex legacy of political reforms and international diplomacy.
