Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – In a significant religious development for Muslims around the world, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has officially announced the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent moon on the evening of Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Following the sighting, Saudi authorities declared Wednesday, May 28, as the first day of Dhul Hijjah 1446 AH — the final month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Consequently, the Day of ‘Arafah, which marks the pinnacle of the Hajj pilgrimage, will be observed on Thursday, June 5, 2025. Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, will follow on Friday, June 6.

The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia confirmed the moon sighting through reliable testimonies in accordance with Islamic tradition. The announcement sets the religious calendar for millions of Muslims preparing for both the Hajj pilgrimage and the Eid festivities.

Global Impact

The Kingdom’s moon sighting plays a central role in setting the calendar for Islamic observances globally. Many Muslim-majority nations and communities around the world align their religious holidays, including Eid al-Adha, with Saudi Arabia’s declaration, especially due to the Kingdom’s role as the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites in Makkah and Madinah.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorates the Quranic account of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. The celebration involves communal prayers, charitable giving, and the ritual slaughter of livestock, with portions distributed to the needy.

Preparations Underway for Hajj 2025

With the dates now confirmed, preparations for Hajj — one of the five pillars of Islam — are reaching their peak. Pilgrims from across the globe are expected to converge on Makkah for the annual rites, with the Saudi authorities implementing health, safety, and logistical measures to ensure a smooth pilgrimage.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has introduced various technological advancements, including electronic registration systems and crowd-control tools, to enhance the pilgrimage experience. The 2025 Hajj is expected to witness a large turnout following increased quotas after pandemic-related restrictions were lifted in previous years.
