Taye Currency Shades Tiri Leather, Sparks Debate Among Fuji Fans

Renowned Ibadan-based Fuji artist, Taye Akande Adebisi, popularly known as Taye Currency, has sparked debate among fans and critics following his remarks during a recent performance. In a viral video that surfaced online, Currency appeared to take a swipe at his fellow Fuji musician and hometown counterpart, Tiri Agbolagade Alamu, better known as Tiri Leather.

The performance held just four days after Currency’s 50th birthday celebration, saw the artist declare that he could never be relegated in the Nigerian Fuji music scene, particularly in Ibadan, Oyo State, where both he and Tiri Leather hail from.

Currency’s statement has reignited discussions about his past and his evolving role in the Fuji music industry. It could be recalled that Taye Currency once held the title of Olori Ebi Oganla (Head of the Oganla family) during his time as a loyalist to his mentor and Fuji icon, Alhaji Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, famously known as Oganla Fuji.

Meanwhile, Tiri Leather has risen to prominence as a key figure among Pasuma’s loyalists in Ibadan. Dubbed the Senate President of the Oganla Fuji family, Tiri Leather has gained recognition for his active role in promoting Pasuma’s legacy in the Fuji music scene, particularly among younger artists.

The viral video has generated diverse reactions from Fuji music enthusiasts, with many taking to social media to share their opinions.

Lawal Ayodeji Ibrahim commented, “This approach is unnecessary (Itara yi po). You don’t need this.”

Adeniyi Muili remarked, “You will end up explaining yourself endlessly (You go explain tire).”

Olajide Babs Owoyele provided insight into the feud, saying, “Do you know why this guy is fighting himself on stage? It’s because Tiri was introduced to many of Pasuma’s fans during the Paso 40 Years on Stage event. Tiri took pictures with top figures like Abana, Okanlomo Abule Ado, Efele, and Onisaga. That alone must have rattled Currency.”

Some fans expressed disappointment in Currency’s actions, with Adebayo Abdullahi Akorede stating, “I love this guy, but his pride is excessive (Igberaga ti poju).”

Others offered advice, with Tobian Ayegbajeje warning, “You’re creating a bigger problem for yourself. In two years, you’ll understand the damage you’re doing now.”

Adio Olaomoola added a different perspective: “I believe Taye’s comments are not directed at Pasuma but at other Fuji artists. Let’s be honest; some people will still say he referenced Paso.”

Saeed Shorinolu Yusuf urged Currency to reconcile with his former mentor: “Please, advise him. Money isn’t everything (Owo koni gbogbo nkan). He should focus on his career, and if he doesn’t want to visit his boss to apologize, he should at least take advice from his elders. Go and beg your oga. Stop fumbling (Ile mejo, ile mewa). Fans will always love who they want to love.”

The ongoing drama highlights the complexities of relationships within the Fuji music industry, with fans divided over whether Currency’s comments were justified or unnecessary. As the debate continues, many are calling for reconciliation and maturity among the artists to preserve the rich legacy of Fuji music in Nigeria.
