Emergency meeting by United Nations

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

New York — Jan. 5, 2026
The United Nations Security Council is currently holding an emergency meeting to discuss the U.S. operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The session, broadcast live on CNN, brings together Council members amid growing international debate over the legality and implications of the seizure.

Speakers at the meeting include Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under‑Secretary‑General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, and Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. DiCarlo is expected to brief members on the potential threats to international peace and security, while Sachs has previously criticized the action as a breach of international norms.

Council members are reportedly divided, with some nations condemning the U.S. action as a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty, while others are urging a careful balance between law enforcement concerns and diplomatic norms.
