Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed concern over the United States President Donald Trump’s recent pronouncements on Nigeria, describing them as “unhelpful and capable of creating more division.”

Kwankwaso was reacting to Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” a label often used by the U.S. to highlight nations facing alleged human rights or religious freedom challenges.

In a statement personally signed by him, Kwankwaso said Nigeria remains a sovereign nation facing complex internal security challenges that cut across ethnic, religious, and political lines.

“Our country is a sovereign nation whose people face different threats from outlaws across the country. The insecurity we face does not distinguish based on religious, ethnic, or political beliefs,” he said.

The NNPP leader urged the United States to adopt a more supportive approach, calling for technological and intelligence cooperation to help Nigeria overcome insecurity rather than punitive measures that could worsen internal divisions.

“The United States should assist the Nigerian authorities with better cutting-edge technology to tackle these problems, rather than posing a threat that could further polarise our country,” Kwankwaso stated.

He also advised the Nigerian government to strengthen its diplomatic engagements with the U.S. and other international partners by appointing seasoned envoys and permanent ambassadors to represent the nation’s interests effectively on the global stage.

“The Nigerian government should also consider appointing special envoys from its distinguished diplomats to engage the American government. Additionally, it is necessary to appoint permanent ambassadors to represent Nigeria’s interests on the international stage,” he added.

Kwankwaso reiterated by appealing to Nigerians to remain united and not allow foreign commentary to deepen internal divides.

“To my fellow countrymen, this is an important moment where we should emphasise unity of belonging over division. God bless Nigeria,” he said.
