Sokoto, Nigeria – February 27, 2025 – The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the crescent moon on Friday, February 28, 2025, to determine the official start of Ramadan 1446 AH.
In a statement signed by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Sultanate Council instructed that any credible sighting of the new moon should be reported to the nearest district or village head for onward transmission to the Sultan. If confirmed, fasting will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Otherwise, Ramadan will automatically commence on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
However, the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has announced that Ramadan will begin on March 1, 2025, based on astronomical calculations. This marks a shift from the traditional reliance on moon sighting and the Sultan’s official declaration.
Reacting to the development, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) reassured that Nigerian Muslims remain united under the Sultan’s leadership. MURIC’s Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, described the differences as academic and not a challenge to the Sultan’s authority.
As Ramadan approaches, the Sultanate Council has urged Muslims to pray for peace and unity while encouraging wealthier individuals to support the less privileged, especially amid economic challenges.
Muslims nationwide are encouraged to participate in the moon sighting and report findings promptly to ensure a unified commencement of Ramadan.
