Abuja — July 2, 2025

In what political analysts have described as one of the most shocking realignments in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, prominent opposition leaders—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, ex-governors Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola—have converged under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the coalition, officially unveiled at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, has ignited controversy across the country, with critics questioning whether this sudden alliance of strange bedfellows is motivated by genuine national interest—or just a shared desperation to reclaim power.

The Who’s Who of Nigerian Politics Rebrands Under ADC

The political show of force included former APC National Chairman John Odigie Oyegun, ex-Governor of Sokoto State Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, Senator Dino Melaye, former Sports Minister Solomon Dalong, Ovation Magazine Publisher Dele Momodu, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Senator Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party, former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and retired Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, among others.

The diversity of the gathering—featuring politicians from PDP, LP, APC, and technocrats from the past three administrations—underscores a broader ambition: to wrestle power from the APC by forming a so-called “national rescue coalition.”

An Alliance Built on Ideals—or on Revenge?

Many Nigerians remain skeptical.

“This is a coalition of contradictions,” said political scientist Dr. Usman Ganiyu of the University of Abuja. “Some of these men were architects of the very chaos they now claim they want to fix. The ADC might have just become a rehab center for expired political ambitions.”

Others see it as a revenge mission.

“How do you explain El-Rufai and Aregbesola—both key APC powerbrokers—now aligning with Atiku and Obi, whom they once dismissed as unserious?” asked Opeyemi John, a political blogger. “This is political hypocrisy at its peak.”

Tinubu’s Men Watch Silently as Loyalists Defect

Though President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership have yet to issue a formal response, the silence from the presidency is deafening. The presence of former Tinubu allies such as Aregbesola and El-Rufai at the ADC unveiling has set off alarm bells within the ruling party.

A top APC source who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “What we are witnessing is betrayal dressed up as patriotism. These people have benefitted from APC and are now trying to pull it down because they weren’t given more power.”

A Grand Plan or a Grand Illusion?

Despite the buzz, the coalition has no clear presidential candidate, raising concerns that personal ambitions could fracture the alliance before it fully takes shape.

“Can Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai, and Amaechi really work together without egos clashing?” asked Dele Farotimi, a lawyer and political commentator. “What unites them today may very well destroy them tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, ADC leaders insist that they are building a new, people-oriented platform.

“This is a coalition built on competence, character, and capacity,” said Dele Momodu during the unveiling. “We are determined to rescue Nigeria from economic misery, social disintegration, and failed governance.”

2027 Begins Today

As the 2027 elections inch closer, the ADC’s grand unveiling marks a bold step toward a three-way presidential race that could redefine Nigeria’s political landscape. Whether this opposition realignment becomes a true force or fizzles out under internal contradictions remains to be seen.

But one thing is certain: the battle for Nigeria’s soul in 2027 has officially begun—and the fault lines are more dramatic than ever.
