Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing prolonged internal crises and unresolved leadership disputes that have weakened the party’s cohesion.

The governor’s decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, Yusuf said his resignation followed extensive consultations with political associates, stakeholders and supporters across Kano State. He explained that persistent internal wrangling, factional leadership struggles and ongoing legal disputes within the NNPP had made it difficult for the party to function effectively and maintain internal unity.

Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the NNPP for providing him the platform to contest and win the 2023 governorship election, noting that his decision was not taken lightly. However, he said the prevailing situation within the party no longer aligned with his vision of stable governance and political progress.

The resignation letter was addressed to the party leadership at his ward level in Gwale Local Government Area, in line with constitutional requirements for party withdrawal.

The Merit Newspaper reports that political observers note that the development marks a major turning point in Kano State politics, given the NNPP’s strong influence in the state following the 2023 general elections. The governor’s exit is also expected to deepen speculation about a possible defection to another major political party, especially as preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually take shape.

As of the time of filing this report, the national leadership of the NNPP had yet to issue an official response to the governor’s resignation.
