Lagos — The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has intensified efforts to build a cleaner, safer and more sustainable city by strengthening strategic collaborations with Lafarge Africa and Zoomlion Nigeria, in a move aimed at transforming waste management across the state.

The partnerships are designed to reposition Lagos from a largely landfill-dependent waste system to a modern circular economy where waste is sorted, recovered, recycled and reused in an environmentally responsible manner. Officials say the initiative will significantly reduce the dangers associated with landfill scavenging while creating structured opportunities for recycling and job creation.

At the core of the new approach is waste sorting at source, which encourages households, businesses and institutions to separate recyclable materials from general waste before disposal. This system, according to LAWMA, improves efficiency, enhances worker safety and ensures that valuable materials do not end up in landfills.

To support this shift, the state is expanding the use of modern Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), where waste is sorted, processed and prepared for recycling. These facilities are expected to serve as hubs for sustainable recovery, reducing environmental pollution while feeding raw materials back into industrial production.

Through its collaboration with Lafarge Africa, LAWMA is also advancing waste-to-resource initiatives, including the use of suitable waste materials as alternative fuel and raw inputs for cement production. This not only cuts down on landfill volumes but also supports climate-friendly industrial practices.

Similarly, Zoomlion Nigeria’s involvement brings technical expertise in waste collection, recycling logistics and environmental sanitation, helping to strengthen the structure and professionalism of recyclable collection across Lagos communities.

Speaking on the initiative, a LAWMA official described the partnerships as a major step toward a 21st-century waste management system. “We are moving Lagos beyond informal scavenging and unsafe recycling practices. This is about building a structured, inclusive and sustainable system that protects the environment, creates value and improves quality of life for residents,” the official said.

The Merit Newspaper reports that environmental experts note that Lagos, as Africa’s largest megacity, generates thousands of tonnes of waste daily, making effective waste management critical to public health, climate resilience and urban development. They argue that collaboration with private sector players is key to achieving long-term success.

Residents are also being urged to play their part by embracing waste sorting, supporting recycling initiatives and complying with sanitation regulations. LAWMA says public participation remains essential to achieving a cleaner and greener Lagos.

With these partnerships, Lagos is positioning itself as a leading example of urban sustainability in Africa—turning waste into value, fostering cleaner communities and reinforcing the state’s vision of A Greater Lagos Rising.
