On February 14 in Nigeria, love is no longer felt—it is priced. From Surulere to Sabo, from Yaba to Yenagoa, romance now comes with a receipt. If you cannot afford dinner, gifts, data for posting, and transportation to “somewhere nice,” then society has quietly concluded that you are incapable of love.

Valentine’s Day in Nigeria has evolved into a national stress test, especially for young people struggling under inflation, unemployment, and daily survival. A country where many cannot guarantee three meals a day still manages to manufacture one of the most emotionally expensive days of the year—and anyone who refuses to participate is treated as suspicious, bitter, or “not romantic.”

The pressure is brutal and gendered. Men are expected to prove love through spending, regardless of income. Women are subtly trained to measure affection by the size of bouquets, restaurant locations, and Instagram aesthetics. Love is no longer about consistency or character; it is about visibility. If it cannot be posted, tagged, and admired, it barely exists.

Ironically, Valentine’s Day in Nigeria produces more quarrels than cuddles. Many relationships enter February 14 already wounded by expectations they cannot meet. Some borrow money to impress partners. Others lie, overpromise, or disappear entirely. What is sold as romance often ends as resentment.

Social media makes it worse. On Valentine’s Day, timelines become digital marketplaces of affection. Couples compete not for intimacy, but for attention. The message is clear: if your partner did not post you, buy you something public, or take you “out,” then you have been cheated emotionally—even if love shows up every other day of the year.

Yet the deepest hypocrisy lies in our collective silence about timing. Nigeria is groaning under economic hardship, rising food prices, and emotional fatigue. We shout about leadership failure and bad governance, yet we line up to celebrate a holiday that thrives on excess, comparison, and imported emotional standards. We blame politicians for our suffering, but willingly punish each other with unrealistic romantic expectations.

This is not a rejection of love. It is a rejection of emotional extortion disguised as romance. Love does not need February 14 to survive. It needs honesty, patience, and shared struggle—things Nigeria has in abundance, even if money is scarce.

Perhaps the real question Valentine’s Day forces us to confront is uncomfortable: are we in love, or are we just afraid of being judged? Are we celebrating affection, or simply performing happiness for people who will scroll past our lives in seconds?

If love only exists when money is available, cameras are rolling, and society is watching, then what we are celebrating is not love—it is pressure. And in a country already suffocating under pressure, Valentine’s Day has quietly become another burden dressed in red.
