Oyo State governorship aspirant, under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has congratulated former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and ex-Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Monsurat Olajumoke Sunmonu, on the occasion of her 67th birthday, describing her as a symbol of visionary leadership and women’s political advancement in Nigeria.

In a goodwill message made available to journalists on Thursday, Ajadi extolled Senator Sunmonu’s political journey, noting that her emergence as the first female Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly in 2011 remains a historic achievement that continues to inspire women and young people to participate actively in governance.

Ajadi said Sunmonu’s years in public service were defined by integrity, courage, and a strong commitment to the welfare of the people, adding that her tenure both in the Oyo State legislature and at the National Assembly left behind notable democratic footprints.

“Senator Monsurat Sunmonu represents a rare breed of leaders whose political career has been defined by sacrifice, humility, and a genuine passion for the development of her people. Her emergence as the first female Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly was not just a personal victory but a major milestone for gender inclusion in our political space,” Ajadi said.

He further described the former lawmaker as a bridge builder whose leadership style encouraged dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence among political actors and constituents.

“At 67, Senator Sunmonu remains a shining example of how purposeful leadership can positively shape society. Her contributions to legislative development, democratic consolidation, and grassroots empowerment cannot be forgotten. She has written her name in gold in the political history of Oyo State and Nigeria,” he added.

The PDP gubernatorial aspirant also acknowledged her service as Senator representing Oyo Central between 2015 and 2019, where she chaired the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, noting that her exposure and experience helped to project Nigeria positively in legislative diplomacy.

According to Ajadi, Sunmonu’s political trajectory—from representing Oyo East and Oyo West constituencies in the State House of Assembly to becoming Speaker and later a Senator—demonstrates resilience, competence, and the rewards of consistency in public service.

“Her life story teaches us that dedication and hard work always open doors to greater opportunities. As a leader, she has shown that politics should be about service, people-centred policies, and the courage to stand for what is right,” Ajadi stated.

He prayed for her continued good health and strength, expressing hope that her wealth of experience would continue to benefit Oyo State and Nigeria through mentorship and advisory roles.

“On behalf of my family, political associates, and supporters, I warmly congratulate Distinguished Senator Monsurat Sunmonu on her 67th birthday. I pray that Almighty God grants her more years in good health, wisdom, and peace so that she can continue to contribute to nation-building and inspire the next generation of leaders,” he said.

Ajadi also used the opportunity to call on women in politics to draw inspiration from Sunmonu’s achievements by remaining steadfast and committed to excellence.

Senator Monsurat Olajumoke Sunmonu, born on April 9, 1959, is widely respected for her contributions to legislative governance and for breaking political barriers for women in Oyo State. Her historic election as Speaker in 2011 marked a turning point in the state’s political history, while her later service in the Senate further strengthened her reputation as a disciplined and result-oriented lawmaker.

As tributes continue to pour in from political leaders, associates, and admirers, many have described her as a leader whose legacy of service, discipline, and inclusiveness will continue to resonate in Oyo State’s political landscape.

Her 67th birthday, observers say, is not only a personal milestone but also a moment to celebrate a legacy of service that has helped shape the democratic journey of Oyo State.
