The disappointment expressed by some football fans following Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is understandable, but it also reflects the burden of expectations that comes with being Brazil.

Many expected the five-time world champions, famous for their beautiful samba football, to sweep aside the Moroccans with ease. Yet, such expectations fail to recognize a simple reality: Morocco are no longer underdogs. They are one of the most formidable teams in world football.

Anyone who truly understands the game knows that facing Morocco today is almost like playing a final. Their organization, tactical discipline, speed, and fighting spirit make them capable of troubling any football powerhouse. France, Spain, Argentina, Germany, or any other favorite would find the North Africans a difficult proposition if they crossed paths in the tournament.

Therefore, Brazil’s draw should not be viewed as a setback but rather as a positive beginning. In fact, few big nations would have been able to match Morocco the way the Brazilians did. The encounter was a contest between two highly competitive sides and offered football lovers a glimpse of the quality that makes the World Cup the greatest sporting spectacle on earth.

The days when Morocco could be considered an easy opponent are long gone. Their performances over recent years have demonstrated that they belong among the elite. They possess players capable of competing with the best, and their collective strength often outweighs individual brilliance.

The Merit Newspaper highlights that for Brazil, there is every reason to remain optimistic. A draw against a team of Morocco’s caliber is far from disastrous. The Seleção displayed resilience and quality against one of the toughest opponents they are likely to face in the group stage.

World Cups are not won in the opening match, nor are champions crowned based on expectations. They are won through consistency, adaptability, and the ability to navigate difficult moments. Brazil have shown that they can do just that.

Rather than lament the result, football fans should celebrate what was, in many respects, a final before the final—a clash worthy of the world stage. If Brazil continue to build on this performance, and if Morocco maintain their impressive standards, both nations could go very far in this tournament.

Sometimes, a draw against a great team is not two points lost; it is a statement that the journey has begun on solid ground.
