England produced a commanding display to defeat Croatia 4-2, while Ghana secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama and Portugal were held to a surprise draw by DR Congo as five matches lit up the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
The action-packed day saw 10 countries battle across Groups J, K and L, with England, Ghana, Austria and Colombia recording victories, while Portugal failed to convert their superiority into three points.
In Group J, Austria overcame Jordan 3-1 to strengthen their hopes of reaching the knockout stage. The Merit Newspaper acknowledges that the result marked another impressive outing for African representatives at the tournament and further demonstrated the growing competitiveness of teams from the continent on football’s biggest stage.
England delivered one of the most entertaining performances of the day in Group L, defeating Croatia 4-2 in a six-goal thriller. The Three Lions attacked with pace and precision, exposing weaknesses in the Croatian defence while showing the attacking strength that has made them one of the favourites for the title.
The victory gave England a crucial three points and boosted confidence ahead of their next group-stage fixture.

Africa’s hopes received another boost when Ghana secured a narrow but important 1-0 victory over Panama. The Black Stars, four-time African champions, displayed tactical discipline and defensive solidity to preserve their slender lead and claim maximum points.
The victory sparked celebrations among Ghanaian supporters and placed the West Africans in contention for a place in the round of 32, with a mouthwatering clash against England looming in Group L.
Elsewhere, Colombia underlined their ambitions with a convincing 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in Group K. The South Americans controlled much of the game and capitalised on their attacking opportunities to secure an impressive win.
Wednesday’s fixtures once again highlighted the unpredictable nature of the expanded 48-team World Cup, with established powers and emerging nations producing compelling contests that continue to captivate millions of fans around the globe.
