ABUJA — The Federal Government has launched FreeTV, a national digital television platform aimed at providing Nigerians with free access to more than 100 television channels without monthly subscription fees.

The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday under the country’s Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme, is expected to expand access to information, education and entertainment, particularly among low-income households and residents of underserved communities.

According to the government, the platform will offer a wide range of channels covering news, sports, movies, music, children’s programmes and educational content, while also promoting indigenous language programming in Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.

FreeTV will be available through satellite and terrestrial transmission as well as a mobile application, enabling viewers to access content on different devices across the country.

Speaking during the unveiling, government officials described the platform as a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital broadcasting journey and a strategic move to deepen access to quality television content without imposing additional financial burdens on citizens.

They said the initiative would enhance media inclusion and bridge the information gap between urban and rural communities, noting that millions of Nigerians who are unable to afford paid television subscriptions would now have access to diverse local and international programming.

The launch forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to complete the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, a process expected to stimulate growth in the creative industry, create employment opportunities and strengthen the nation’s broadcasting ecosystem.

The Merit Newspaper reports that industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a step toward democratizing access to information and entertainment in Africa’s most populous nation.

Observers believe the success of the initiative will depend largely on the quality of content, nationwide signal coverage and sustained investment in digital broadcasting infrastructure.

With the launch of FreeTV, Nigeria joins a growing number of countries leveraging digital technology to expand access to free-to-air television services and promote wider dissemination of information to citizens.
