The race for places in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensified on Friday as France, Spain, Belgium and Senegal delivered commanding performances, while Iran and Egypt settled for a hard-fought draw in a day that reshaped the standings in Groups G, H and I.

With qualification and group positions hanging in the balance, fans across the globe witnessed six fiercely contested matches that produced 17 goals, emphatic victories and tactical battles, underlining the unpredictable nature of football’s biggest tournament.

Former world champions France reaffirmed their title credentials with a convincing 4-1 victory over Norway in Group I. Didier Deschamps’ side controlled possession, dictated the tempo and demonstrated their attacking quality to secure maximum points and strengthen their position ahead of the Round of 32.

Despite Norway’s spirited effort and determination to challenge one of the tournament favourites, France’s superior experience and clinical finishing ultimately proved decisive as Les Bleus marched confidently into the knockout rounds.

In the same group, Senegal produced one of the most dominant displays of the tournament by thrashing Iraq 5-0. The African representatives overwhelmed their opponents from the opening whistle, combining pace, physicality and creativity to record the biggest victory of the day.

The emphatic win highlighted Senegal’s growing influence on the global football stage. It reinforced Africa’s increasing competitiveness at the World Cup, where several teams from the continent have continued to challenge football’s traditional powerhouses.

Group H also produced gripping encounters. Spain edged Uruguay 1-0 in a tactical contest decided by a moment of attacking brilliance and disciplined defending. The narrow victory reflected Spain’s trademark possession-based style, as they frustrated Uruguay’s attempts to find an equaliser and secured a crucial three points.

The second Group H fixture ended in a goalless draw between Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Although neither side managed to break the deadlock, both produced disciplined defensive displays in a match where clear-cut scoring opportunities were limited.

In Group G, Belgium reminded the football world of their attacking quality with a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand. The European side dominated from start to finish, creating numerous chances and converting them with ruthless efficiency to maintain momentum heading into the knockout phase.

Meanwhile, Egypt and Iran shared the spoils in a closely contested 1-1 draw. Both teams displayed tactical discipline and resilience in a match that remained evenly balanced throughout, with each side earning a point that could prove significant in determining the final group standings.

The Merit Newspaper reports that Friday’s fixtures brought the group stage closer to its conclusion and further clarified the identities of teams advancing to the Round of 32. The results also reinforced the growing competitiveness of the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup, where emerging football nations continue to challenge established powers.

As the tournament progresses into the knockout rounds, expectations continue to rise for high-quality football, dramatic encounters and memorable moments as nations pursue the ultimate prize in world football.
