The 2026 FIFA World Cup served up another thrilling day of football on Thursday as Ecuador produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by defeating Germany 2-1, while the Netherlands secured top spot in Group F with a convincing victory over Tunisia. Türkiye also earned a dramatic win over the United States as six group-stage matches reshaped the race for places in the Round of 32.

Ecuador delivered the headline result of the day, overcoming four-time world champions Germany 2-1 in a fiercely contested Group E encounter. The victory underlined the South Americans’ growing confidence and ensured a dramatic finish to the group, while Germany’s defeat dealt a significant blow to one of the tournament favourites.

In the other Group E fixture, Ivory Coast defeated Curaçao 2-0 to strengthen their qualification hopes. The African side controlled proceedings from start to finish, displaying defensive discipline and clinical finishing to secure all three points.

Group F also witnessed impressive performances as the Netherlands defeated Tunisia 3-1 to continue their unbeaten run and reinforce their credentials as genuine title contenders. The Dutch combined fluid attacking football with defensive stability to comfortably claim maximum points.

Japan and Sweden shared the spoils in a tightly contested 1-1 draw, a result that kept both nations firmly in contention for a place in the knockout rounds. The evenly matched contest reflected the growing competitiveness of this year’s expanded World Cup.

Perhaps the most dramatic encounter came in Group D, where Türkiye edged the United States 3-2 in a five-goal thriller. Türkiye twice surrendered their advantage before finding the decisive breakthrough, condemning the Americans to a painful defeat that leaves their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

Meanwhile, Paraguay and Australia battled to a hard-fought goalless draw in another Group D fixture. Although neither side found a breakthrough, both earned a valuable point in an increasingly competitive group.

The Merit Newspaper acknowledges that Thursday’s action further demonstrated the unpredictable nature of the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup, with established football powers continuing to face stiff resistance from emerging nations determined to make history on the world’s biggest football stage.

As the group stage approaches its conclusion, every point has become increasingly valuable, setting the stage for more high-stakes encounters as teams battle for qualification to the Round of 32. With surprise results becoming a recurring theme, the tournament continues to captivate football fans worldwide, proving once again why the FIFA World Cup remains the sport’s greatest spectacle.
