The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday across the country to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, with the holiday set aside for Nigerians to mark the nation’s independence anniversary.
Nigeria attained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, and the annual celebration provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the country’s journey, achievements and challenges since independence.
The 2026 anniversary is also being observed as Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, with the Federal Government earlier announcing a programme of activities leading up to October 1.

The programme includes religious services, a public lecture and other commemorative events
The Federal Government had indicated that this year’s anniversary activities would be low-key, with emphasis on reflecting on the contributions and sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and heroines and Nigeria’s journey since independence.
As part of the anniversary programme, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on Thursday, October 1, while Nigerians across the country are expected to participate in various activities marking the national day.

The government urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the significance of independence, promote national unity and reaffirm their commitment to the peace, development and progress of Nigeria.
