Cape Town is often described as a city where beauty and creativity meet. During my two-week stay at Sun 1 Hotel, nestled in the vibrant heart of the city, I had an unforgettable encounter with Robin Mathews, the hotel’s official photographer. It wasn’t just a meeting; it was an intersection of two worlds—journalism and photography—united by a shared mission to tell stories that matter.

Robin Mathews, a South African photographer with an eye for detail, spends his days capturing the spirit of Sun 1’s guests and the vibrant life that surrounds the hotel. I first noticed him weaving through the lobby, camera in hand, his sharp focus evident in the way he approached his craft. Our paths crossed when he invited me for a quick photo session, and what started as a casual introduction turned into a meaningful discussion about storytelling through visuals and words.

In one memorable moment, we posed together for a photograph. Robin’s camera, mounted on a sturdy tripod, stood between us like a silent witness, capturing not just an image but the essence of two professionals dedicated to their crafts. Another camera—handled by a curious onlooker—immortalized the scene from a different angle. That image symbolized the broader story: a collaboration between two disciplines that rely on each other to amplify their impact.

Photography and Journalism: Partners in Storytelling

Photography and journalism are inseparable allies in the world of storytelling. While words provide context and depth, photographs capture the raw emotion of a moment. Robin shared stories of how his photographs had brought joy to Sun 1’s guests, creating lasting memories of their stay in Cape Town. As a journalist, I resonated with his passion for documenting moments that matter.

We spoke about the importance of authenticity, especially in Africa, where the stories we tell often counter the narratives perpetuated by global media. Robin’s photographs of guests from all walks of life showcase a side of Cape Town that goes beyond Table Mountain and pristine beaches. Similarly, my work as a journalist focuses on telling the untold stories of Nigerians and other Africans—stories of resilience, culture, and innovation.

Cape Town as a Canvas for Creativity

Our meeting in Cape Town underscored the city’s role as a hub for creative minds. The vibrant culture, scenic landscapes, and diverse communities provide endless inspiration for storytellers. Sun 1 Hotel, with its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to capturing guest experiences, embodies this spirit. It was here that a journalist and a photographer found common ground, united by their belief in the power of stories to bridge divides and inspire change.

A Call for Collaboration in African Storytelling

My encounter with Robin Mathews reaffirmed the need for collaboration between African journalists and photographers. Visual storytelling adds layers of meaning to written narratives, making stories more accessible and impactful. Together, we can challenge stereotypes, celebrate diversity, and highlight the beauty and complexity of Africa.

As I look back at the photograph we took together, I’m reminded of the power of partnerships in storytelling. Whether through the lens of a camera or the strokes of a pen, every story we tell shapes how the world sees Africa—and how Africa sees itself.
