Akinwunmi Ambode

As the 2027 governorship elections approach, a growing number of Lagosians are clamoring for the return of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to the helm of affairs in Nigeria’s commercial capital. Ambode, who served as governor from 2015 to 2019, is being remembered fondly for his impactful infrastructural projects and efforts to modernize the state.

A survey interview conducted by The Merit Newspaper on Friday, January 10, 2025, revealed that many Lagosians are eager to see Ambode make a political comeback and succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Respondents highlighted Ambode’s leadership qualities, transformative policies, and infrastructural achievements as reasons they believe he is the right choice for the state in 2027.

“Akinwunmi Ambode was a governor who understood the needs of Lagosians,” said Adewale Musa, a trader in the Alaba Market. “He gave us projects like the Jubilee Bridge in Ajah and the Abule-Egba Flyover. Traffic reduced significantly in those areas during his time. We need him back in 2027 to continue what he started.”

For many Lagosians, Ambode’s administration is synonymous with infrastructure and urban renewal. His focus on easing transportation challenges through the expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system remains a standout achievement.

“I remember when the new BRT routes were introduced under Ambode,” said Ifeoma Ifeanyi, a teacher in Ikeja. “It became easier to move around. He also worked on tourism with events like the One Lagos Fiesta. It brought life to Lagos. We miss that energy and focus.”

Ambode’s leadership, particularly in waste management and urban planning, also resonates with residents who believe the state has taken a step back in recent years.

“During Ambode’s time, there was the Cleaner Lagos Initiative. Even though it faced some challenges, it showed that he cared about the environment. Now, waste management is a mess again,” said Omowunmi Kosoko, an environmentalist in Surulere. “We need a leader like Ambode who can tackle these issues.”

According to the survey by The Merit Newspaper, Lagosians believe Ambode’s technocratic approach to governance made a significant difference. An alumnus of the University of Lagos and Harvard University, Ambode was known for his strategic thinking and hands-on leadership style.

“Ambode was not just a politician; he was a leader who delivered results,” said Aishat Ibrahim, a businesswoman in Lekki. “It’s not about politics; it’s about performance. If he runs again in 2027, I will definitely vote for him.”

Despite his achievements, Ambode failed to secure a second term in 2019 after losing the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the current governor. However, the growing calls for his return suggest that many Lagosians believe Ambode has unfinished business in the state.

While the former governor has yet to officially declare any intention to contest in the upcoming election, his supporters remain optimistic that he will heed their call. As Lagosians reflect on his past achievements, the prospect of an Ambode comeback continues to generate excitement and hope among his admirers.
