It is irritating and disgusting to see videos of young women displaying erratic behaviors go viral on social media with captions like, “This one has been used by Yahoo boys again,” or “The ritualists among the sugar daddies have used these ladies again.” Other captions read, “This lady has been used for ritual purposes by ritualists.” While such captions are sensational, they trivialize a deeper issue plaguing our society: mental health neglect.

Mental health challenges, including stress, anxiety, and depression, are rising rapidly in Nigeria and across the world. Experts warn that ignoring the importance of mental well-being can lead to devastating consequences, as seen in some of these viral cases. Addressing this issue requires practical steps to improve mental health and prevent further societal harm.

Here are six expert-recommended ways individuals can improve their mental health and well-being:

1. Practice Mindfulness
Spending a few minutes daily meditating, breathing deeply, or focusing on the present moment can help reduce stress and improve mental clarity.

2. Stay Physically Active
Physical activity, such as walking, jogging, or engaging in yoga, for at least 30 minutes a day is proven to boost energy levels and enhance mood.

3. Adopt a Healthy Diet
A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins nourishes the brain and body, supporting overall mental health.

4. Build and Maintain Strong Relationships
Having a reliable support system of friends and family is essential for emotional well-being. Spending quality time with loved ones can reduce feelings of loneliness and stress.

5. Set Realistic Goals
Breaking larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps can reduce overwhelm. Celebrating small achievements along the way keeps motivation high.

6. Seek Professional Help
When overwhelmed, consulting a therapist or counselor is crucial. Recognizing the need for professional guidance is not a sign of weakness but a step toward healing and resilience.

As cases of mental instability become more visible in society, it is vital for individuals, families, and governments to prioritize mental health. With awareness and proactive measures, many of these tragic situations can be prevented, ensuring a healthier and more productive society for all.

The time to act is now. Let us address mental health issues seriously before they spiral further out of control.
