The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared its opposition to the recent 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs approved by the Federal Government, threatening a nationwide boycott of telecom services if the decision is not reversed.
NLC President Joe Ajaero, speaking at a press briefing, described the tariff hike as a deliberate and unjust burden on Nigerians already struggling with harsh economic conditions. He noted that the average Nigerian worker currently spends 10% of their income on telecommunication services, a figure that would rise to 15% under the new tariff structure.
“This increase is unsustainable and unacceptable,” Ajaero stated. “The government should prioritize the welfare of its citizens rather than approving policies that push them further into hardship. The NLC cannot stand by and watch Nigerians suffer.”
To protest the tariff hike, the NLC is mobilizing Nigerians for a mass boycott of telecommunication services. Ajaero urged citizens to reject the increase and prepare for collective action to demand a reversal of the policy.
He also called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Assembly, and the Federal Government to immediately suspend the implementation of the new tariffs. Ajaero suggested that a broader dialogue involving all stakeholders would be necessary to address the issue and arrive at a more equitable solution.
“The government must halt this hike and engage in meaningful discussions with labor unions and consumer advocacy groups. Nigerians cannot bear another financial burden, especially given the rising cost of living,” he said.
The NLC’s stance is part of its ongoing advocacy for improved living standards and better policies to alleviate the economic challenges facing Nigerians. The labor union has assured its members and the public that it will continue to fight against policies that adversely affect workers and citizens.
